Bridgeport resident Jamal Gordon died during the early morning hours on Saturday, Dec. 24 after his BMW SUV left the roadway and landed in Bridgeport Harbor, said Capt. Brian Fitzgerald of the Bridgeport Police.
The incident began around 2:50 a.m. when the department received a call of a motor vehicle accident at the intersection of Stratford Avenue and Waterview Avenue, Fitzgerald said.
The caller indicated that a vehicle had left the road, traveled down an embankment, and entered the water. Upon arrival, police and fire personnel found a BMW sport utility vehicle partially submerged on its roof in Bridgeport Harbor, police said.
Witnesses indicated that the driver was still inside the vehicle. The Bridgeport Police Scuba Team was requested and fire department personnel entered the water in cold water rescue suits. The fire department was able to remove the vehicle driver from the water and began life-saving efforts, Fitzgerald said.
Fitzgerald said Gordon was transported by medics to Bridgeport Hospital where he died from his injuries.
He was the sole occupant of the vehicle. Gordon's family was at the scene of the accident and notification was made.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
A visitation for Gordon will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 3 at Morton's Mortuary, 25 Margaret E. Morton Lane, Bridgeport.
Anyone who may have witnessed the accident is asked to call Bridgeport Police Tips Line at 203-576-TIPS.
